I want to remind everyone that the Christmas Parade is Saturday, December 1st. Pack 101 will meet at the Save-A-Lot at 12:30. If it is raining heavily, the rain date for the parade is Sunday, December 2nd.
Please wear your scout uniforms, but also dress warmly and appropriately. Also, bring a bag of wrapped candy if you want to throw candy. Parents, the end of the parade route is over by the library and park. Please meet us there to pick up your son.
I'll be taking pictures, which I will post here as soon as I can.
Also, scouts, I received the prizes from Trail's End popcorn today. When we have our December Pack Meeting, we will be handing out those prizes.
Roger
Welcome to the Metropolis Illinois' Cub Scout Pack 101 website and blog. This blog will maintain a regular calendar of events, link pictures and provide other important information to the scouts and parents of Pack 101. I encourage you to communicate back and forth to me and other members of Pack 101 with any questions you might have through the blog.

The Popcorn Money Is In...
I want to thank all of the leaders and parents for getting to the Pack meeting tonight and reconciling popcorn sales. Because most of the scouts who sold popcorn were there, we were able to meet our obligation to the Weaver Popcorn Company, and are well on our way to have the funds to have another great year in scouting! Thank you all for making our fundraiser a success!
However, scouts and parents, if you did not reconcile your popcorn sales tonight, please get your popcorn delivered as soon as possible, and turn in your sales and popcorn order forms to me. I am usually home in the evening after 6pm. My address in 113 Lindsey Avenue. I have to have these outstanding accounts settled as soon as possible to be able to accurately budget for the next few months of the scouting calendar.
All the scouts thoroughly enjoyed picking up their pinewood cars. If you were unable to attend the pack meeting tonight, you can pick up your pinewood car from your den leader once you settle your popcorn order.
Also, there are a few returning scouts who still need to pay dues from last year. If those dues are not paid, those scouts can not be registered as we recharter this year, which means those scouts can not continue to participate in our events. Please, if you are a returning scout, see your den leader if you owe back dues, or if you are not sure if you owe back dues. Your den leaders will be able to tell you.
Also, a final reminder: We will participate in the Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 1st. We need to gather up by the Save-A-Lot store at approximately 12:30. You can bring candy to throw, just make sure it is individually wrapped pieces.
See you all at the Christmas Parade!

Reminders...
I know I'm going to sound like a broken record, but Tuesday, November 27th is our PACK MEETING, starting at 7pm in the basement of the UM Church. WE WILL SETTLE UP POPCORN ACCOUNTS AT THAT TIME. It is vitally important that you are there. Lisa, our accountant, will be able to settle up any discrepancies right then and there.
Also, scouts returning from last year need to settle up any unpaid dues from last year so that we can register them when we re-charter our pack. If a scout is not registered, the scout can not attend meetings or participate in fun events like the pinewood derby.
Speaking of the Derby, we WILL BE HANDING OUT PINEWOOD CARS TO ALL REGISTERED SCOUTS AT THE PACK MEETING AS WELL. This will be the opportunity for scouts to get their free car and begin working on it.
--------------------------------------------
Next, THE CHRISTMAS PARADE: We will gather up by the Save-A-Lot at 12:30 on this Saturday, December 1st. Scouts need to wear their uniforms, but also dress warmly. If scouts want to throw candy, they can, but you need to bring your own bag of wrapped candy.
--------------------------------------------
We will be Christmas carolling for our Pack meeting in December. Because of the holidays, we will have our Pack Meeting on Thursday, December 13th. We will meet at approximately 5 p.m. at the parking lot of the UM Church, and caravan to 5 different assisted living centers in town. Afterwards, we will have hot cocoa and hand out all earned awards from popcorn sales.
--------------------------------------------
Lastly, I know many parents want to know the rules of the Pinewood Derby, even though it is not going to be held until the end of January. Posted below are the official rules for the Derby.
Only Cub Scouts are allowed to race in the official races. However, anyone associated with scouting (parents, leaders, boy scouts, brothers and sisters of scouts) can participate in the Open Class race after the cub scout official race. We also will be featuring a Hall of Champions, and want everybody who has a built one or more pinecars in the past to bring their cars so that we may display them for the boys.
FOR CUB SCOUTS: You must follow the rules for building the pinecar, and must use the official kit supplied to you by the Cub Scouts. If you need additional kits, you can purchase them from Pack 101 for $5.00. Your cars must use the block of wood and all of the stock parts which come in the kit. It must be the specified wheelbase, axle height, length, width, and weight (5.0 ounces or less). You can add weights, wood, and other parts as long as the car stays within the stated guidelines. A dry graphite-based lubricant can be used on the wheels. My advice is to apply the lubricant after you have completely finished the car. If you need to double-check the weight of your vehicle, you can do so at the Metropolis Post Office.
FOR OPEN CLASS RACERS: You must begin with an official pinecar kit. The wheelbase, axle height, and overall width of the vehicle must be as specified in the kit. However, most everything else can be modified. Although you must use the block of wood as the body, exactly how much of it you is is up to you (meaning, at least some part of the body must be made from the original block of wood). The wheels, axles, weight, and just about every other aspect of the vehicle is OPEN for interpretation (which is why it is called the Open Class). I will make any final decision about whether or not a car will be allowed to race. For example, if the car won't fit on the track, or if racing the car would damage the track, it will not be allowed to race. If you are unsure whether or not a modified car you wish to run will be allowed to race, please contact me ahead of time (618) 524-8340 or pugh@shawneelink.net and I'll make a decision about it.
Many awards will be handed out. So, having a fast racer might be great, but having a unique design, or an interesting paint job, or an unusual use of material will also be recognized, as well as many, many other attributes.
This year, we will be using our digital timer, and our two-lane custom aluminum track. This year’s Pinewood Derby should be better than ever. We look forward to seeing you there!

Decorating the Christmas Float
We have had a Christmas Float in the Christmas Parade for years. However, this was the first time since I have been Cubmaster that we made a concerted effort to set time and money aside to really create a nice float.
However, as often occurs when anybody tries something new, there were a few minor snags. For example, not everybody knew that we were going to be working on the float at Balinda's house last night. In fact, it was the lapses in communication that spurred me to make this website. There was no fault or foul here, just difficulties in getting in contact with everybody. This website will help eliminate some of these communication problems, I hope! Also, I didn't bring all the tools I needed, and had to go back to my house for tools.
Enough with the problems. Overall, the event was a great success, and all the boys (and some of their sisters, who were girl scouts) had a great time. We served cookies and hot cocoa, and had each of the kids and some of the parents work on different elements of the float. We made jingle bells, we made giant candles from cardboard and tin foil, and we made the form for a big snowman which will ride in the center of our trailer. Also, my project was to make the lighted sign, which says, "35th Anniversary" because this year is the 35th anniversary of the first charter of the Metropolis Cub Scouts. We didn't finish the float, but all of the hands there made short work of the parts we could finish. Thank you to EVERYONE who was there. These are the kinds of events that make cub scouting worthwhile. From the scouts' perspectives, this was an opportunity to have fun, pal around with friends, and to make something they will be proud of next Saturday. It just so happens to also be a great way for us to involve them as active citizens in our community.
Again, as a reminder, the Christmas Parade will be on December 1st, and we will meet in the Save-A-Lot parking lot at 12:30. The younger scouts will ride on the float, while the older scouts will walk. I believe Faith said that the Webelos II scouts will carry the banner. Scouts and leaders must wear uniforms if you have them. But, dress appropriately. If it is cold, wear a long sleeve shirt under your scout shirt, wear a coat, gloves, hat, etc. If any boy wants to throw candy during the parade, parents, you will need to supply your son with a bag of wrapped candy. We are going to take some Pack photos, but I will be happy to take individual photos of scouts for any parents who would like for me to do that. Just find me and remind me to do so.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Parade!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

News regarding upcoming events
Welcome, all scouts and parents, leaders and committee people to the newly created blog for Cub Scout Pack 101. On this blog, I will post a regular calendar of events, and encourage you to communicate back and forth to me and other members of Pack 101 with any questions you might have. I have created the blog as an open forum, and as long as I am not having to fight through mountains of spam, I will keep it that way.
For All Returning Scouts: November is the month that we re-charter our organization. Your dues from last year must be paid in full this month, or you will not be allowed registered for this year. Please see your den leader or contact me if you need to know how much you owe (if anything) in back dues. It is important that this get settled up this week!
There are several key events coming up: November 27th: 7 pm, UM Church. Pack Meeting, and popcorn money turn-in will happen then. It is imperative that you attend this meeting, and turn in your popcorn sales. Also, we will award any advancements, and will hand out the pinewood derby car kits that evening.
Next, December 1st: 12:30 meet at the Save-A-Lot parking lot for the Christmas Parade. Scouts need to dress warmly, but also wear their uniforms. The younger scouts will ride on the float. Any scouts who wish to throw candy must bring their own bags of individually wrapped candies.
Your individual dens will have a meeting during the first week of December, but on Thursday, December 13th, we will be having our annual Christmas Carolling event. We will meet up at the church at approximately 5 pm, and then go to five different assisted living centers in town. When we finish, we will meet back at the church, have cookies and hot cocoa, and give out the prizes and cash awards for the popcorn sales.
Then, we are off until January, which will be our Pinewood Derby Race! More to come on that in the next few weeks.
