We have had a Christmas Float in the Christmas Parade for years. However, this was the first time since I have been Cubmaster that we made a concerted effort to set time and money aside to really create a nice float.
However, as often occurs when anybody tries something new, there were a few minor snags. For example, not everybody knew that we were going to be working on the float at Balinda's house last night. In fact, it was the lapses in communication that spurred me to make this website. There was no fault or foul here, just difficulties in getting in contact with everybody. This website will help eliminate some of these communication problems, I hope! Also, I didn't bring all the tools I needed, and had to go back to my house for tools.
Enough with the problems. Overall, the event was a great success, and all the boys (and some of their sisters, who were girl scouts) had a great time. We served cookies and hot cocoa, and had each of the kids and some of the parents work on different elements of the float. We made jingle bells, we made giant candles from cardboard and tin foil, and we made the form for a big snowman which will ride in the center of our trailer. Also, my project was to make the lighted sign, which says, "35th Anniversary" because this year is the 35th anniversary of the first charter of the Metropolis Cub Scouts. We didn't finish the float, but all of the hands there made short work of the parts we could finish. Thank you to EVERYONE who was there. These are the kinds of events that make cub scouting worthwhile. From the scouts' perspectives, this was an opportunity to have fun, pal around with friends, and to make something they will be proud of next Saturday. It just so happens to also be a great way for us to involve them as active citizens in our community.
Again, as a reminder, the Christmas Parade will be on December 1st, and we will meet in the Save-A-Lot parking lot at 12:30. The younger scouts will ride on the float, while the older scouts will walk. I believe Faith said that the Webelos II scouts will carry the banner. Scouts and leaders must wear uniforms if you have them. But, dress appropriately. If it is cold, wear a long sleeve shirt under your scout shirt, wear a coat, gloves, hat, etc. If any boy wants to throw candy during the parade, parents, you will need to supply your son with a bag of wrapped candy. We are going to take some Pack photos, but I will be happy to take individual photos of scouts for any parents who would like for me to do that. Just find me and remind me to do so.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Parade!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Roger
Welcome to the Metropolis Illinois' Cub Scout Pack 101 website and blog. This blog will maintain a regular calendar of events, link pictures and provide other important information to the scouts and parents of Pack 101. I encourage you to communicate back and forth to me and other members of Pack 101 with any questions you might have through the blog.
