Wishing You All Merry Christmas!

To all of the scouts, parents, leaders and other volunteers that support Pack 101: Merry Christmas!

Our regular scouting calendar will begin again after the New Year's holiday. As a reminder, the January pack meeting, (4th Tuesday in January) is the Pinewood Derby. Please check with your leaders and this website for all of the details. If you need a pinewood car, you can get one from your den leader for $5.

Christmas Caroling....

On Thursday, December 13th, a large group of Cub Scouts and parents went caroling to the assisted living centers in Metropolis. One of the most important lessons in Cub Scouts is to teach the boys that Cub Scouts give good will. I can't think of a better way to do that.

While the boys caroled, I had the fun of getting the hot cocoa and cookies, and more importantly, the popcorn prizes, ready to hand out. When the boys and parents made it back to the church, everyone came to order, and we quickly got the goodies going! I did miss singing, so I led the Pack in singing a nice round of "Rudolph." The boys also signed some wonderful Christmas cards which will go to the nice folks at Little Tractor, who let us use one of their trailers for the Christmas Parade, to Lisa Gower, our tireless accountant, and to Joe Ogle, without whom, Metropolis would not have a Cub Scout Pack.

This is the last Pack meeting of the year. Our next regular meetings will begin in January. In January, I will have a lot to post about our Pinewood Derby, the district Pinewood Derby, and believe it or not, upcoming Summer Camps for the boys.

To everyone, Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Here We Go A-Caroling....

We will go caroling this Thursday, December 13th. We need to gather together up at the church at approximately 5 pm. At approximately 7 pm, we will have our pack meeting, enjoy cookies and hot cocoa, award any advancements, and give out popcorn prizes and cash awards.

There are a couple of catches: First, if you still haven't turned in all of your popcorn money, we might not be able to distribute the prizes. We'll still have them, and you'll still get them, but we need to settle the popcorn sales. Next, if you sold more than $500 in popcorn, your total has to be settled before we can award your cash bonus.

It is possible that you may have one or two people who just won't pay for the popcorn they ordered. So be it. If that is the case, you can turn in any of the money you have and those one or two pieces of popcorn that you couldn't sell. Either way, we must get your accounts settled.

One more thing: We had to recharter. The charter was already a month late. There are a couple of active scouts who will not be registered on this charter because they still owed back dues. Please, if you think you owe back dues, please talk to your den leader. We can get your scouts registered and placed on the new charter, but back dues and some paperwork will now need to be complete and up to date.

This Thursday will be our last meeting of the year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

December Pack Meeting, assorted news

I have some very exciting news to report: Jonathon Hodges, one of our scouts, WON the drawing for the electric scooter! Congratulations, Jonathon! Also, earlier this fall, Tristan Odom won $50 in scout bucks! The drawing for the Nintendo Wii will happen next week. Let's hope another scout from Pack 101 is lucky enough to win it.

Next Thursday, December 13th, we will be gathering at the church at 5 pm to begin Christmas Caroling. At approximately 7 pm, we will make our way back to the church for the December Pack Meeting.

At the Pack Meeting, we will warm back up with hot cocoa and cookies, give out advancements, and hand out prizes for those scouts who have completed their popcorn sales.

A special message to you if you have not yet turned in your popcorn money: It is vitally important that you turn in your popcorn sales to me ASAP! You can stop by my house at 113 Lindsey Avenue after 6 pm. Also, some boys still owe dues from last year. Popcorn sales and back dues must be paid before the Pack Meeting on the 13th.

I don't want to harp about it, but for all the right reasons, if popcorn money is still owed, you should pay it. This fundraiser teaches responsibility, honesty, and trust, three of the biggest and best lessons we try to instill in cub scouts. The Cub Scouts in Metropolis are well-respected because we meet our obligations.

I look forward to Christmas Caroling and the next Pack Meeting.

Christmas Carols, Hot Cocoa and Cookies!

Now, that is a post title that should get everybody's attention! On Thursday, December 13th, we will gather at the UM Church parking lot at approximately 5 pm. We will caravan in our vehicles to several different assisted living centers across town. There, the boys will sing Christmas carols.

If you can't make it to the church right at 5, below is our tentative schedule. I would encourage you to join us en route if you can. Otherwise, plan on meeting at the church at 7 pm for the Pack Meeting.

5:30: MNRC, on Metropolis St.

5:45: Southgate, on 9th St.

6:00: TLC, on 10th St.

6:15: Twin Oaks, right next door

6:30: Krypton House, 8th and Vienna

7:00: Pack Meeting back at the church

December is a short meetings month for us for obvious reasons, so this special event will also be our Pack Meeting, and for Tigers, will also be the Go See It event. At the Pack Meeting, we will have an opening ceremony, warm ourselves up with hot cocoa and cookies, give out any advancements, and most importantly, award all prizes to boys for their popcorn sales!

However, scouts must have their popcorn sales turned in to receive their prizes. Also, any returning scouts who still owe back dues must get those dues to me in order to be a registered member of Pack 101. If you aren't on the charter, you can't participate. Please, if you are not sure if you have paid last year's dues, talk to your den leader or me right away.

I look forward to seeing you all next Thursday!

The Christmas Parade

The Christmas Parade was great fun for everyone involved. We had over 30 scouts participate, which is the most I have seen on our float since I have been doing this. The boys really enjoyed themselves, and I can only say "thank you" to all of the parents who helped make this happen. I have put up several pictures from the parade up on the sidebar. If you have photos, please email them to me.

Next on the calendar, we have regular den meetings, and then on Thursday, December 13th, we will have our Pack meeting. Our December schedule is a little short because of the holidays. On December 13th, we will meet up at the church beginning at 5 pm, and all caravan to the different assisted living centers here in town. We will go Christmas caroling at the different centers. At approximately 7 pm, we will meet back at the church for our Pack meeting. At the Pack meeting, we will have hot cocoa and cookies, and will hand out the prizes the boys have earned from their popcorn sales.

Which reminds me, if you haven't turned in your popcorn money, it is important that you turn in your popcorn sales to me as soon as possible. You should bring your sales and your sales sheets to my house, at 113 Lindsey Avenue. I will be available after 6 pm. It is vital that we get all outstanding accounts settled now.

Also, if you are a returning scout, and you owe back dues, we must get those dues paid NOW. We can't register boys on our new charter if they owe back dues. If you are not sure if you owe back dues, please call or see your den leader NOW. If a boy owes back dues, and is not on the charter, he can't participate in events, like the pinewood derby, kite building contest, raingutter regatta, etc.

I look forward to seeing all of the boys caroling on the 13th. However, if you can't make the caroling, please still come to the Pack meeting to pick up your popcorn prizes and to enjoy some cookies and hot cocoa.

Thanks,

Roger
