A parent recently asked a good question: "What are my out of pocket expenses for Cub Scouts, besides what I have already paid (registration fees)?"
She expected that we would charge for the events that we host, for the cars, rockets, and boats the boys build, and for any of the special programs that we plan for the boys. My short answer was, "Besides registration, buying the parts to the uniform and getting the book, there are no other costs. All of the advancements we supply; all of the cars for the pinewood derby, all of the boats for the regatta, in fact, all of the costs associated with our regular programs are costs that the Pack covers." Last year, our Pack spent nearly $4000 on advancements, badges, car, rocket and boat kits, supplies for leaders, food for cook-outs, prizes for races, and funded a "supertrip" to the Science Center and the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee.
How can we do that? Well, we are not independently wealthy, so each year, we have a fundraiser, and sell boy scout popcorn. Each year, the community supports our boys and we generate enough funds to put on a terrific program for the boys, take trips, have cook-outs and great prizes for our races. We can do this because the boys do a wonderful job helping the Pack raise money through this popcorn sale.
We will begin the popcorn sale during the first week of September. You will get all of the information you need about the sale from your leaders, or from me, Mr. Pugh, the Cubmaster. I will be getting all of the order forms and materials for the sale on September 3rd, and will be distributing it to your leaders starting that day. We will go over the specifics of the popcorn sale in our den meetings.
I look forward to another great year in scouting!
Welcome to the Metropolis Illinois' Cub Scout Pack 101 website and blog. This blog will maintain a regular calendar of events, link pictures and provide other important information to the scouts and parents of Pack 101. I encourage you to communicate back and forth to me and other members of Pack 101 with any questions you might have through the blog.

Round Up and Important Information For New Scouts
This Tuesday, we had our round up, and had about 40 new scouts join Pack 101. That is terrific! There are several more who will join who couldn't make it Tuesday, but called to set up appointments with me to get registered.
People at the Round Up asked several good questions, and I will try to answer them as I remember them.
First: Do we need anything for your first meeting? The only thing you MUST have is your den's book. You can buy your den's book at Hooper's in Paducah, which is downtown on Broadway. They cost around $7.
Second: Do you have a uniform? Yes, and the uniform parts do not have to be purchased all at once. That can be expensive. Hooper's will have all the uniform parts, but you can also order them through JC Penny's, and even off of ebay. The uniform parts we use are as follows:
1. Hat for the appropriate den.
2. Shirt for the appropriate den. Tigers, Wolfs, and Bears (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade) wear the blue shirt. Webelos 1 and 2 (4th and 5th grade)can choose instead to adopt the tan shirt of the boy scouts. If you are Webelos, please talk to your leader before you buy your shirt.
3. Patches for the shirt. You need to purchase the council patch (Shawnee trails council), the blue fleur-de-lis(world scouting emblem), the pack numbers (1-0-1), and your den number (tigers, den 4, Wolfs, den 2, Bears, den 3, Webelos 1, den 1, and Webelos 2, den 5). Webelos scouts also need their colors.
4. Neckerchief and neckerchief slide for the appropriate den.
5. Belt and buckle for the appropriate den.
Here is a picture of how and where your patches can be ironed or sewn on.

WELCOME TO CUB SCOUT PACK 101!
Our Cub Scout Round-Up is this coming Tuesday, August 25th, at 7 pm at the United Methodist Church. This is the time that we sign up new members to the Pack and introduce the new scouts to their leaders. This is also when we recruit any new adult leadership. We look forward to a large round-up and many great additions to our Pack. The round-up is for new members only. Returning members do not need to attend the round-up.
In September, we will begin our popcorn fundraiser. Every year, our community really goes the extra mile to support cub scouts.
We have a great year of events planned for the scouts, and we hope to see you and your son there!

Raingutter Regatta and Pool Party!
Last Saturday, it was a grey day. It rained before the pool party. In fact, while we were setting up the grill, before we began the actual party, it poured. For the first 15 minutes or so, it looked like we were going to get soaked, whether we got in the pool or not. However, the rain cleared, we had our race, handed out lots of prizes, cooked lots of burgers, and enjoyed ourselves in the pool for the rest of the evening. Here are some pictures:
In August, we will visit schools and prepare scouts and leaders alike for the new year in scouting. We will have our official cub scout round up August 25th, from 7 to 9 in the basement of the United Methodist Church. If you are interested in scouting, but are not part of our Pack, please come by and learn more about Pack 101. You'll be glad you did!
