Cub Scout Pack 101 Day Trip Caravan To The Parthenon and the Adventure Science Center in Nashville, TN Saturday, July 25th, 2009
Our daytrip this year will be like last year’s trip. Instead of having to require formal permits, get physicals from all scouts, etc., we will require any scouts who attend to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This way, our trip simply will be a group of parents attending with their sons, and each of you will have responsibility for your own families. Instead of renting vehicles, (very costly) and paying a lot for gas (more costly), we have decided to caravan to Nashville, TN, and spend a day at the Parthenon and the Adventure Science Center. Pack 101 will pay for tickets and attractions for one scout and one parent or guardian per scout. We encourage you to bring your whole family, as the entire day will be filled with great things to do for kids of all ages. However, you would be responsible for the costs for other family members. Scouts should wear their uniforms to make it easy to identify the members of Pack 101.
On the morning of July 25th, 6:15 a.m., we will meet at the United Methodist Church parking lot. From there, we will caravan to Nashville, TN. Parents, you should be prepared to drive your family, or talk with other families who are attending in advance, to find a vehicle to ride in. For example, I will be driving, and even if my whole family attends, I should be able to take one or two more people with me. The itinerary for the trip is included with this form. It is important to note, that since you are responsible for you and your scout, you can join or leave the day’s events at any time. However, I hope you plan to spend the day with us!
On the way home, Pack 101 will pay for dinner at a typical fast food restaurant (think McDonalds). We will pay for a happy meal for the kids, and your dinner choice. If you want extras, like a shake or sundae, or more than a typical meal choice, please take care of that on your own.
I have recently mailed the RSVP with lunch and dinner choices. Please fill out and return ASAP! to me. You can drop off your form at my house (113 Lindsey Avenue, Metropolis) or email your answers to me (pugh@shawneelink.net). But, it is important to do this as soon as possible, so that we can plan our menus, budget our funds for tickets and fees, and prepare the venues we will go to for the number of people who are attending.
We will leave the Methodist Church parking lot promptly by 6:30 a.m. Please make sure that before we leave, I have a cell phone number for each driver. Also, once we are at the locations in Nashville, please make every effort to stay with our group, so that any group discounts we might secure can be easily distributed to everyone who attends. If we consolidate and carpool, Pack 101 might be able to help each driver with the cost of gas for the trip, but we can’t promise that as of yet.

The Cubmobile Race!
June 20th was the Cubmobile Race. Several boys were there. The sun was hot, but we sped along and got the race in before it heated up too much. Here are some of the boys racing and winning some prizes. Congratulations to Julian Russell who had the fastest time!

The Space Derby and Summer Events...
In May, we finished our regular Cub Scout year with our first annual space derby. Everybody had a great time. Here are pictures from the event:
The next events will include the Cubmobile Race, our Supertrip, and our Pool Party and Raingutter Regatta.
Mark June 20th on your calendars for the Cubmobile Races! The races will begin at 10 am sharp. Please try to be there a few minutes early. The race course starts at the intersection of 9th Street and Girard Street, and ends at the intersection of 9th Street and Catherine Street.
The cubmobile race is a gravity race---that is, the scout sits in the vehicle, and gravity pulls him down the hill. Even though it is going to be hot, we recommend that the scouts wear pants, just in case of an accident. I’d rather see somebody dirty up their pants than scrape their shins. Also, boys should bring their own bicycle helmets. Again, in the unlikely event of an accident, I’d rather see a helmet covering a boy’s head than not.
The race will feature two heats, and two heats only, for each participant. The fastest racer from each den will be awarded a certificate for their performance. If we have time, and it is not too hot, we will race the fastest racer from each den one final time to determine a grand champion. From time to time, we might need an adult volunteer to help move things along.
Drinks will be provided. Friends and family are welcome to take part in our festivities. Please be courteous of the homeowners on each side of our race course. Although the street will be cordoned off for us, homeowners’ yards are still private property. We must treat the homeowners with respect, and try to stay off of their lawns.
Mark Saturday, July 25th on your calendars for our Summer Supertrip. We will be
visiting the Parthenon in Nashville, the only stone by stone reproduction of this historic building in the world. Inside, besides a variety of exhibits, is the largest indoor statue in the world, a re-creation of the statue of Athena. Our group will take a guided tour of the facility.
After we visit the Parthenon, we will break for lunch, and then spend the rest of the day at the Adventure Science Center. While at the Center, we will see a terrific laser light show in the planetarium, and let the kids enjoy a variety of hands-on
science exhibits. Then, we will break for supper and drive back home. This year, like last year, we will require that all scouts are accompanied by one parent or guardian, and that each family that goes must be responsible for driving to and from our destination.
Pack 101 will pay entrance fees for any of the events we plan, for one scout and one adult per family. We encourage you to bring the whole family; however, you would be responsible for any of the tickets or fees for the rest of your family. Pack 101 will supply lunch and dinner for the scouts. We will send an RSVP with a specific itinerary and lunch and dinner choices later this month. We should be able to carpool to save costs and burn less gas; as we get closer to the date, I will ask everyone to take advantage of those who will be driving vans or who would have space available in their vehicles. It is also possible that Pack 101 might be able to help reimburse drivers for the cost of gas. We’ll see as we get closer to the event.
Next, the August Pool Party and Raingutter Regatta!
The date for the pool party in August is not yet set, but I will alert everybody when it is set. This year, the pool party will start at approximately 6 pm. We will have the pool until 9 pm. Everyone in the family is invited, and we encourage you to invite your son’s friends, too. We will grill out hamburgers and hot dogs, and supply everything for dinner. You just need to show up with your swim suit and beach towel! The Raingutter Regatta will be held in conjunction with the August Pool Party. You should contact your leader or contact me if you do not have your Raingutter boat kit. If you haven’t yet participated in the Raingutter Regatta, it truly is a “blast!” This summer is shaping up to be one of the best ever: Cubmobile races, a trip to Nashville, a pool party and the raingutter regatta...see you soon!
