First off, I’d like to say THANK YOU to all of the scouts and parents who participated in the Christmas Parade, the Food Drive, and Christmas Caroling! Our Pack was awarded the First Place in the Christmas Parade for our age group! Also, several of our scouts won the drawings for the extra popcorn prizes that were offered district-wide. Our own Ben Bowlin won a playstation 3! Congratulations, scouts!
PINEWOOD DERBY 2011
Our Pinewood Derby will be held January 25th up at the United Methodist Church. Scouts need to CHECK IN at 6:30 p.m. Please be there on time. Scouts sign in, cars are weighed, and any last minute adjustments are done. We begin racing at 7:00 p.m. Rules for the derby are short and sweet:
FOR CUB SCOUTS: You must follow the rules for building the pinecar in your pinewood derby kit. You must use the official kit supplied to you by the Cub Scouts. If you need additional kits, you can purchase them from Pack 101 for $5.00. Your cars must use the block of wood and all of the stock parts which come in the kit. It must be the specified wheelbase, axle height, length, width, and weight (5.0 ounces or less). You can add weights, wood, and other parts as long as the car stays within the stated guidelines. A dry graphite-based lubricant can be used on the wheels. My advice is to apply the lubricant after you have completely finished the car. If you need to double-check the weight of your vehicle, you can do so at the Metropolis Post Office.
FOR OPEN CLASS RACERS: You must begin with an official pinecar kit. The wheelbase, axle height, and overall width of the vehicle must be as specified in the kit. However, most everything else can be modified. Although you must use the block of wood as the body, exactly how much of it you is is up to you (meaning, at least some part of the body must be made from the original block of wood). The wheels, axles, weight, and just about every other aspect of the vehicle is OPEN for interpretation (which is why it is called the Open Class). I will make any final decision about whether or not a car will be allowed to race. For example, if the car won't fit on the track, or if racing the car would damage the track, it will not be allowed to race. If you are unsure whether or not a modified car you wish to run will be allowed to race, please contact me ahead of time (618) 524-8340 or pugh@shawneelink.net.
Many awards will be handed out. So, having a fast racer might be great, but having a unique design, or an interesting paint job, or an unusual use of material will also be recognized, as well as many, many other attributes. We look forward to seeing you there!
RECYCLABLE SNOWMANCONTEST 2011
Every year at the Pinewood Derby, we also hold a contest for each den to make a snowman, but not just any snowman. In the past, we have made edible snowmen, in which all the parts have to be foodstuffs. However, we realized that wasting food when there are people in our own community who need food was just not the right message to send to our scouts. So, we decided this year to have a recyclable snowman contest, in which each den will make a small snowman or winter scene featuring a snowman from any materials that have been repurposed for this project. That might include cardboard, cans, plastic wrap, or any old thing that you can recycle into a snowman!
SCOUT SUNDAY 2011
Every year, the United Methodist Church recognizes Pack 101, and invites us to join them for church on Sunday. This is our opportunity to honor their support of our Pack and be thankful for the space, time, and facilities they devote to us as well. Please plan on joining the United Methodist Church parishioners for Scout Sunday on February 13th. Worship service starts at 10:00 a.m. Scouts and leaders should wear their uniforms.
BLUE AND GOLD BANQUET 2011
The next big event in our calendar is THE BLUE AND GOLD BANQUET, a special scout event held in place of our February Pack Meeting, on Saturday, February 26th. This year’s theme for our Blue and Gold Banquet will be “Camping Out,” and our potluck will be traditional scout camp food. The First Baptist Church Family Life Center will host our event. It is located at the intersection of 6th and Catherine Street. If you turn at the DQ, it is one block down on the left. Each den has been assigned some specific foods to bring. If you’re not sure what that is, please contact your den leader. People need to show up with their food dishes at approximately 5:30 p.m. The banquet itself will begin at 6:00 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
EVERYONE in your scout’s life is invited---mom, dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, in-laws and outlaws. We will supply the main course, drinks, and dessert. We ask each family to bring one of the dishes we asked their dens to prepare, so that our banquet table will be bountiful. It is very important that you RSVP to me the TOTAL number of people in your family, including your scout, who will be attending the banquet. We need to know how many tables to set up and how much of the main dish, drinks, and other supplies we will need to buy. PLEASE, RSVP by February 18th by mail, phone, email, or facebook. This is also the time at which we recognize, through official ceremony, the crossing over of Webelos II scouts from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. From that moment on, they are Webelos II no longer. The larger adventure of scouting awaits them. The entire Pack participates in this advancement. We look forward to seeing you there!

REMINDER: POPCORN MONEY TURN-IN WILL HAPPEN THIS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23RD, UP AT THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AT 7 PM. PACK ACCOUNTANT LISA GOWER WILL SETTLE UP ALL POPCORN ORDERS. YOU MUST TURN IN YOUR POPCORN ORDER AT THIS TIME. OUR MEETING WILL BE UPSTAIRS BECAUSE THE BASEMENT WILL BE IN USE BY THE CHURCH.

We will meet at Jared and Afton English’s home at 3955 Macedonia Church Road at 6 p.m. The easiest directions to the house from Metropolis is to take 45 North towards Joppa, and turn right on Macedonia Church Road. Stay on it until you have to turn right. The house is less than a quarter mile down the road from the turn. We will be working in a heated barn, but please dress for cold weather work. Our theme is Camping and Christmas! Parents, please bring any old, unwanted Christmas decorations or camping gear that you no longer use, and we will recycle it one more time for the float before those items hits the trash! Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided.
Saturday, December 4th: We will participate in the Christmas Parade. We will gather at the Washington Park area at approximately12:45 p.m. Scouts and parents who will walk with us, please dress accordingly! If scouts wish to throw candy, they may, but parents, you need to supply candy for your scout. The parade goes from Washington Park to the Market Street area. We ask for parents to meet us to pick up their scouts at the new fire station across from the Sav-A-Lot. Please make your way there after the parade. Leaders will stay in that area until all scouts are picked up.
Because we have been so blessed in our popcorn sale, we have decided to give back to the community with a food drive for COPE (Christian Outreach Program Emergency). COPE has helped families in need in Metropolis since the 1970’s.
Saturday, December 11th: Food Drive. We will be positioned at Big John’s, Sav-A-Lot, the Dollar Store, Family Dollar, and Pat’s Market from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. taking donations of food. Please see the attached flyer for general information. Contact your den leader and/or Melissa Rushing (270) 994-2645 for details about the times and places scouts will be scheduled to man the tables.

We begin by meeting up at the United Methodist Church parking lot before 5 p.m. At 5 p.m., we will carpool and caravan to the different assisted living centers in Metropolis, singing Christmas carols at each stop. If you can’t make it at 5p.m., please stop by later, and we will give you a schedule of events, and you can catch up. At approximately 7 p.m., we will meet back up at the basement of the church and have hot chocolate and cookies, award any advancements, and distribute the popcorn prizes that the boys have earned. We will hand out information about the upcoming Pinewood Derby, which happens during the January Pack Meeting.

Pinewood Derby and Blue and Gold
First off, I’d like to say THANK YOU to all of the scouts and parents who participated in the Christmas Parade in December, Christmas Carroling, and our Pinewood Derby! Our Pack was awarded the Third Place in the Christmas Parade, our best showing yet!
We held our Pinewood Derby on January 26th up at the Church. We nearly had 50 participants, making it one of our largest derbies ever. I want to thank everybody for participating, all of the leaders for their supervision, and all of the parents and families for supporting your scouts! Pictures of the Derby and of each den were taken by the folks up at the Metropolis Planet. You can see the pictures at The Metropolis Planet and when our pictures are posted, you can view them here.
Even though our event was a terrific success, it has come to my attention that despite our best efforts, a couple of mistakes occurred. First, it's possible that one boy's time was recorded incorrectly. The parents of the boy were writing their scout’s times down because they were texting their friends about his participation in the race. Their texts are different than the time we recorded, which would have made a difference in the race. I think it is right and fair that we recognize the boy without taking away the accomplishments of anyone else. Second, it looks like in another case, the time was recorded correctly, but the best times weren't circled. Again, I am not pointing fingers here. One leader recorded the times, another reviewed them for the awards, and I looked at them again while I was reading them off. Mistakes happen, and it is not a matter of negligence nor maliciousness. However, one boy was upset when he realized that his time should’ve been recognized and wasn’t. The first boy, for whom there might have been a time discrepancy, was Austin Cohoon. The other boy, whose time wasn’t recognized during the race, was Cobie Copley. I am proud of both of these boys. My sincerest apology goes out to them, and my gratitude to the folks who made me aware of our mistake.

We would like to congratulate Adam Cohoon and the Tiger Cubs for winning the Edible Snowman contest this year! Adam’s scouts received the award of a pizza party for their den, and made one of the most inventive snowmen (a Jamaican snowman made of meatballs!) I’ve ever seen.
I also want to thank everybody who was present for Scout Sunday up at the United Methodist Church on the 14th. We had a great turn out.

Christmas Carolling and Pack Meeting..
Scouts, this Tuesday, December 15th, we are going to go Christmas Carolling and then have our pack meeting. We will begin by meeeting up at the UM Church parking lot at 5 pm. We will carpool and caravan, scouts and parents, from one assisted living center to the next, until about 7 pm. Then we will all convene back at the church for cookies, hot cocoa, advancements, and GIVING OUT THE POPCORN PRIZES. Two of our scouts won prizes in the Council-wide give-aways.
ITINERARY:
5 pm: Meet at the Church, get music books for carolling from Leslie Bates. Carpool and caravan to these assisted living centers:

Twin Oaks
Krypton House
Leslie will have the exact order and a sheet with the addresses for each place.

Schedule of Events....
First, thank you to all scouts and parents who made our float construction go so smoothly! I especially want to thank Mike and Melissa Rushing for allowing us to take up their garage space for the next few weeks.
Yesterday, Tuesday the 24th, was our popcorn turn in date. Almost everyone turned in their popcorn sales, which was greatly appreciated. If you have not turned in your popcorn sales, please turn your money and order forms into Lisa Gower, at Creations the Florist in Metropolis. In the next few days, I will be calling all folks who have not turned in popcorn money or had undeliverable popcorn. I will help get that popcorn sold or delivered!
Our next events include your regular den meetings, and then on December 5th, Saturday, we will walk and ride with our float in the Metropolis Christmas Parade. We need to meet at Washington Park (across from the Library) at 12:30. The parade will end by the new firestation (across from the Save-A-Lot). The plan is as follows: At approximately 5 pm, we will carpool and carvan our Pack to the different assisted living centers, and sing Christmas carols to the residents. At approximately 7 pm, we will return to the UM Church basement and have our Pack meeting, eat hot cocoa and cookies, hand out any advancements and awards, and give the boys any prizes earned for popcorn sales, including cash awards. Then, we are officially off for the rest of the month of December. We will begin den meetings again starting the first full week of January.
In January: The Pinewood Derby! If you want to get a look at our Pinewood Derby, please look through the archives of the website. It is probably the biggest event for the boys, and one they deserve after they have worked so hard to progress through their ranks, and have successfully completed our fund raiser to provide a great program for the rest of the year.
Also in January, we will have our edible snowman contest, in which each den makes a snowman, either by itself or in a scene, but everything in it must be edible! The winning den will get a pizza party courtesy of Pack 101!

Yesterday, Tuesday the 24th, was our popcorn turn in date. Almost everyone turned in their popcorn sales, which was greatly appreciated. If you have not turned in your popcorn sales, please turn your money and order forms into Lisa Gower, at Creations the Florist in Metropolis. In the next few days, I will be calling all folks who have not turned in popcorn money or had undeliverable popcorn. I will help get that popcorn sold or delivered!
Our next events include your regular den meetings, and then on December 5th, Saturday, we will walk and ride with our float in the Metropolis Christmas Parade. We need to meet at Washington Park (across from the Library) at 12:30. The parade will end by the new firestation (across from the Save-A-Lot). Christmas Caroling and Pack Meeting
Scouts and parents,
Our December Pack meeting is nearly upon us. We have several items of business to attend to.
On December 16th, this coming Tuesday, we will meet outside of the UM Church in Metropolis, at 5 pm. We will caravan to the different assisted living centers in Metropolis and sing Christmas carols to the residents. Part of being a good scout is giving good will. This is about the best way I know how to do that. It may be that there is simply no way that you can meet us at 5 pm at the church. Below is posted our itinerary, so that if you can't join us at 5pm, you can join us later. If you can't go caroling, please still plan on attending the Pack Meeting.
We will assemble at 5 pm. We will drive first to Southgate, 900 East 9th Street. Then,at approximately 5:30, we will go to MNRC, at 2299 Metropolis Street. At approximately 6 pm, we will go to Joe Ogle's house, at #8 Hilanoa. We have some gifts to give him in honor of his service to our cub scout Pack. At approximately 6:30 pm, we will go to Krypton House, at 502 West 8th Street. Lastly, everyone will come back up to the UM Church for our Pack meeting at 7 pm.
As scouts and parents are seated, we will serve hot cocoa and cookies, award any advancements, and then hand out prizes for popcorn sales. If your scout earned a prize but you have not yet settled up popcorn sales, we will award the prize after the sale is settled. We will go over our calendar for the first part of next year.

Next, we will have our annual Christmas Caroling on December 16th. We will meet at 5 pm at the parking lot of the UM Church. We will caravan to different assisted living centers, and will make a special stop at the house of Joe Ogle. We expect to have scouts back at the church at approximately 6:30 pm, at which time we will have cookies and hot chocolate, complete our Pack Meeting, and give out our popcorn prizes. Prizes will not be awarded if you have not settled up your popcorn orders, however, so please, if you have outstanding popcorn orders, get them settled up right away. Please take your money up to Lisa Gower at Creations the Florist.
Also, any boys who still need to pick up their pinewood cars can do so at this meeting. This will be our last meeting this year. Leaders will begin meetings again in January.

Christmas Parade
First off, thank you to EVERYONE who helped build the float. I think the boys enjoyed themselves, and made short work of a really nice float. Thank you parents and leaders, for being there.
This Saturday, December 6th, is the Metropolis Christmas Parade. We will meet at 3rd and Metropolis Street, by Washington Park, at approximately 12:30. Scouts need to be in uniform, but also dressed appropriately for the weather. It will be cold.
Scouts can throw candy, but must bring their own sealed candy if they choose to do so.
The younger scouts shall ride on the float, and the older scouts will walk and carry our banner.
The Parade will end at 9th and Market, over by the Save A Lot. Please meet us over there after the parade, and pick up your scout from there.
As a reminder, if you haven't settled up popcorn sales, please do so NOW. You should take your money for popcorn sales to Lisa Gower at Creations the Florist during regular business hours.

Popcorn Sales Records!!!
Folks,
All I can say is "Thanks, to everyone!" This year, we have exceeded our Pack goal in popcorn orders, and have turned in the highest unit sales in our council. I have received special congratulations given to our Pack from our district executive, and from the sales representatives at Trails End Popcorn.
This year, we physically had more boys taking orders for popcorn than ever before, and after many years of doing this, had one boy take enough orders to qualify for the Trails End Scholarship Program (he took orders for over $2800), which will allow Jonathan Hodges to to begin to build a scholarship fund in which Trails End puts 6% of his total popcorn sales into an account for him to use when he goes to college! This year, Jonathan earned about $175 dollars to start that account, and every year, Trails End will put 6% of any further sales he makes into that account for him. Congratulations, Jonathan.
This year, we had many, many boys entered into the $50 club drawings. We also had about 10 boys entered into the $500 club (some several times) drawing, which means that for every multiple of $500 dollars of popcorn orders taken, a boy would be entered once into a drawing for a cool electric scooter. With so many entered, it is possible that someone from Pack 101 will win. Let's hope! We should know at the end of the popcorn sale who won.
Also, for every boy that filled up a popcorn order sheet, each sheet filled became an entry into a drawing for a Nintendo Wii. Again, since so many boys in our Pack filled up one or more popcorn order forms, we stand a good chance to see one of our own win that terrific prize.
The next event for popcorn sales will be the receipt of the actual product, which will occur on November 8th. Leaders will distribute that to their individual scouts. Then, we will have approximately 17 days to deliver and take payment for the popcorn. Checks need to be made out to PACK 101. Then we will settle up the popcorn sale. At our November Pack Meeting, all money must be turned in. Our Pack accountant will be there to settle each person's popcorn order right then.
HERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE NEXT EVENTS:
October 28: Pack Meeting, 7 pm, at the UM Church in Metropolis. Adults, bring a bag of sealed candy. Scouts can dress in costume if they choose to. We will have some prizes for costumes to award.
November: Popcorn delivery and settling up orders.
November Pack Meeting. We settle accounts, and HAND OUT THE PINEWOOD DERBY KITS TO ALL OF THE SCOUTS. It is IMPERATIVE that scouts are there to settle up money for the popcorn sale, BUT ALSO TO PICK UP THEIR **FREE** PINEWOOD CAR KIT.
Also, in November, we will work on our Christmas Float for the Christmas Parade.
December: First Saturday, march in the Parade with our float.
December: Go Christmas caroling, and distribute all of the prizes and cash our scouts earned for their popcorn sales.

Christmas Caroling....
On Thursday, December 13th, a large group of Cub Scouts and parents went caroling to the assisted living centers in Metropolis. One of the most important lessons in Cub Scouts is to teach the boys that Cub Scouts give good will. I can't think of a better way to do that.
While the boys caroled, I had the fun of getting the hot cocoa and cookies, and more importantly, the popcorn prizes, ready to hand out. When the boys and parents made it back to the church, everyone came to order, and we quickly got the goodies going! I did miss singing, so I led the Pack in singing a nice round of "Rudolph." The boys also signed some wonderful Christmas cards which will go to the nice folks at Little Tractor, who let us use one of their trailers for the Christmas Parade, to Lisa Gower, our tireless accountant, and to Joe Ogle, without whom, Metropolis would not have a Cub Scout Pack.
This is the last Pack meeting of the year. Our next regular meetings will begin in January. In January, I will have a lot to post about our Pinewood Derby, the district Pinewood Derby, and believe it or not, upcoming Summer Camps for the boys.

December Pack Meeting, assorted news
I have some very exciting news to report: Jonathon Hodges, one of our scouts, WON the drawing for the electric scooter! Congratulations, Jonathon! Also, earlier this fall, Tristan Odom won $50 in scout bucks! The drawing for the Nintendo Wii will happen next week. Let's hope another scout from Pack 101 is lucky enough to win it.
Next Thursday, December 13th, we will be gathering at the church at 5 pm to begin Christmas Caroling. At approximately 7 pm, we will make our way back to the church for the December Pack Meeting.
At the Pack Meeting, we will warm back up with hot cocoa and cookies, give out advancements, and hand out prizes for those scouts who have completed their popcorn sales.
A special message to you if you have not yet turned in your popcorn money: It is vitally important that you turn in your popcorn sales to me ASAP! You can stop by my house at 113 Lindsey Avenue after 6 pm. Also, some boys still owe dues from last year. Popcorn sales and back dues must be paid before the Pack Meeting on the 13th.
I don't want to harp about it, but for all the right reasons, if popcorn money is still owed, you should pay it. This fundraiser teaches responsibility, honesty, and trust, three of the biggest and best lessons we try to instill in cub scouts. The Cub Scouts in Metropolis are well-respected because we meet our obligations.

Christmas Carols, Hot Cocoa and Cookies!
Now, that is a post title that should get everybody's attention! On Thursday, December 13th, we will gather at the UM Church parking lot at approximately 5 pm. We will caravan in our vehicles to several different assisted living centers across town. There, the boys will sing Christmas carols.
If you can't make it to the church right at 5, below is our tentative schedule. I would encourage you to join us en route if you can. Otherwise, plan on meeting at the church at 7 pm for the Pack Meeting.
5:30: MNRC, on Metropolis St.
5:45: Southgate, on 9th St.
6:00: TLC, on 10th St.
6:15: Twin Oaks, right next door
6:30: Krypton House, 8th and Vienna
7:00: Pack Meeting back at the church
December is a short meetings month for us for obvious reasons, so this special event will also be our Pack Meeting, and for Tigers, will also be the Go See It event.
